General Mills Joins Kraft Heinz to Remove Synthetic Dyes
Big food companies like General Mills (think Lucky Charms) and Kraft Heinz are going to stop using artificial colors in their foods in the US.
They're doing this because the government wants to get rid of these colors, which are called FD&C colors, by 2026, as part of a plan to improve the health of people who eat these foods.
General Mills plans to remove these dyes from its products including those in school lunches by next year, and Kraft Heinz already removed the dyes from some products and is working on the rest, replacing them with natural colors or making changes to products where artificial color is important.
They are removing things like Red 40 and Yellow 5, some of the most common artificial colors, to make their products healthier and safer.
General Mills and Kraft Heinz will remove synthetic dyes from US products by the end of 2027.
The changes are in response to health and FDA initiatives to eliminate synthetic food dyes.
General Mills will remove colorants from cereals and school foods by summer of next year.
Kraft Heinz already removed dyes from some products and will phase them out of others.
These actions follow health recommendations to prioritize consumer well-being.
