SEBI Proposes Easier Duplicate Securities Certificate Rules
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) wants to make it easier for people to get a new copy of their lost stock certificates.
Right now, if you lose your certificates, you have to do a lot of paperwork like filing a police report, putting a notice in the newspaper, and signing different forms.
This is only easier if the lost certificates are worth less than Rs 5 lakh.
SEBI wants to raise this limit to Rs 10 lakh.
This means if your lost certificates are worth Rs 10 lakh or less, you only need to sign one form.
If they are worth more, you still have to file a police report.
SEBI thinks this will make things simpler and cheaper for investors.
All new copies of certificates will also be in a digital form, not paper.
SEBI proposes to simplify the process for issuing duplicate securities certificates.
Current threshold for simplified documentation is Rs 5 lakh; SEBI proposes to raise it to Rs 10 lakh.
Investors with securities valued below Rs 10 lakh will only need to provide a single combined affidavit-cum-indemnity bond.
For securities valued above Rs 10 lakh, filing an FIR or similar complaint will still be necessary.
All future duplicate certificates will be issued in dematerialised form.
