Woman on Writer's Retreat Falls in Love with the Sky

Woman on Writer's Retreat Falls in Love with the Sky

A woman writer is tired of busy life with friends, family and society.

Her government sends her to a quiet, faraway retreat to make art in peace.

Before she goes, she joins a protest because the government did nothing when armed people hurt a sculptor who made a nude statue.

She also goes to a party celebrating that an untouchable person came first in the country's big civil service exams for the very first time.

At the airport, strict new rules say she can bring only one bag, so she has to throw away some things and squeeze everything into one backpack.

She is so tired that she falls asleep on the plane.

She dreams of a beautiful blue tortoise that has no battery or motor - it is simply alive.

In her dream, something taps the plane like a ball, and the plane slides just outside the edge of the world.

When she wakes and lands, people act like robots in a moving picture, but the woman feels a warm glow of joy.

She feels the new sky is waiting for her, and her story comes from Geetanjali Shree's new book translated by Daisy Rockwell.
