New India Assurance reports Q1 loss
New India Assurance, a major insurance company in India, recently reported a loss for the first three months of the financial year.
This loss happened because the prices for property insurance, especially fire insurance, dropped a lot.
Other insurance companies were selling fire insurance at very low prices to get more customers, which hurt New India Assurance's earnings.
The company's overall income from selling insurance policies stayed almost the same as last year.
The chairman of the company said that this quarter was tough for the insurance industry.
The company also had to pay a lot in claims for car insurance, which made the loss even bigger.
However, the company is still financially strong and has a lot of money invested.
They plan to focus more on selling insurance to small businesses and individual customers in the future.
New India Assurance reported a net loss of ₹257 crore for Q1 FY27, compared to a net profit of ₹391 crore in the same period last year.
The gross written premium remained largely flat at ₹13,720 crore, with a muted growth of 2.9%.
Fire insurance premium fell by 27% year-on-year to ₹1,971.34 crore, while health insurance premium remained flat at ₹6,819 crore.
The combined ratio deteriorated to 121.44%, indicating higher claims and operating expenses relative to premiums earned.
The motor third-party segment faced pressure with a loss ratio of 122.20%, due to no premium increase and continued claim inflation.
