Delhi Exhibition Reexamines Emily Eden’s Portraits of India

Emily Eden was an English artist and writer who visited India in the 1830s.

She travelled with her brother George, who was an important British official, and with her sister Fanny.

While travelling, Emily drew and painted many people she met.

These included princes, workers, children, servants and ordinary people.

She also wrote about her experiences.

Her pictures were published in a book in 1844.

A Delhi exhibition has brought many of her artworks and personal papers together.

Experts see the art as both beautiful pictures and evidence of how British officials interacted with Indian rulers.
