UN Report Criticizes Israel's Actions in Gaza
The UN Committee against Torture has released a report that criticizes Israel for its actions in Gaza.
The committee is worried about the high number of deaths and the suffering of the Palestinian people due to Israel's response to the attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
The report says that Israel's policies seem to be causing very bad living conditions for Palestinians and that there are reports of torture and mistreatment.
The committee wants Israel to set up an independent investigation into these allegations, make torture a specific crime in its laws, and let humanitarian aid into Gaza.
The committee also acknowledged the security threats Israel faces and the loss of life due to the Hamas attacks.
The UN Committee against Torture condemned the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas and expressed concern over Israel's disproportionate response.
The committee reported that living conditions for Palestinians have severely deteriorated due to what appears to be a policy of collective punishment.
There are allegations of organized and widespread torture and ill-treatment by Israel, which have intensified since October 7, 2023.
The committee urged Israel to establish an independent investigation into these allegations and to criminalize torture in its laws.
Israel was also asked to ensure the immediate entry of humanitarian aid and aid workers into Gaza.
