Kolkata Protest: Civil Society Against SBI's GMU Shift
A group in Kolkata, called Bank Bachao Desh Bachao Manch (BBDBM), is upset because the State Bank of India (SBI) wants to move a big part of its business, the GMU, away from the city.
They worry this move will hurt Kolkata's economy, like losing money and jobs.
Over 200 people, including doctors and students, joined a protest to show SBI they disagree.
They say Kolkata has always been important for SBI's foreign business and fear the move is unfair and will harm the city's history.
A civil society forum protested SBI's decision to shift its Global Market Unit (GMU) out of Kolkata.
The Bank Bachao Desh Bachao Manch (BBDBM) organized the protest.
BBDBM claims the move will harm West Bengal's economy and Kolkata's banking role.
The relocation could deprive West Bengal of over Rs 65 crore in annual GST revenue.
