Scott Urges Ban on Federal Funds for Chinese Medical Devices

Senator Rick Scott wants hospitals receiving federal money to stop buying medical devices made by Chinese companies.

He is worried that internet-connected machines could let unauthorized people access hospital systems or patient information.

He pointed to a patient monitor called the Contec CMS8000.

The FDA found that the monitor had several cybersecurity weaknesses.

The weaknesses could allow remote control, cause the machine to work incorrectly, or expose connected networks.

The FDA said it did not know of any related cyberattack, injury, or death.

A software patch later removed the device’s networking functions.

The Commerce Department is also studying whether the United States relies too much on foreign medical-equipment suppliers.
