India Hosts EU, US Trade Talks
India is having important trade talks with the European Union and the United States.
The EU team, led by Sabine Weyand, is meeting with India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss a big trade deal called a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
They want to finish the deal by the end of the year.
The EU wants lower taxes on cars and medical devices, while India wants better access for its products like clothes and electronics.
The EU is India's biggest trading partner.
At the same time, India is also talking to the US about another trade deal.
These talks show how important India is in global trade.
The EU ambassador said this deal is different from past ones and will benefit both sides.
They are negotiating continuously instead of having formal rounds.
The talks with the US are also progressing well, and India hopes to sign the first part of that deal this year.
EU and Indian negotiators are meeting in New Delhi for crucial FTA talks, with a year-end deadline set during European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's visit in February.
Key sticking points include EU demands for duty cuts on automobiles and medical devices, and India's push for duty-free access for labor-intensive goods.
The EU is India's largest trading partner, with bilateral merchandise trade totaling $136.2 billion and services trade reaching $70 billion in 2023.
India and the United States are also scheduled to hold trade talks in New Delhi starting December 10 to advance negotiations on the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
Both sides have agreed to drop the traditional approach of formal negotiation rounds and are now in a continuous negotiating mode.
