Tamil Nadu Engineering Colleges Face Over One Lakh Vacancies
Tamil Nadu has many engineering seats that students have not chosen yet.
After the second admission round, more than one lakh seats were still empty.
This does not necessarily mean students dislike engineering.
Many students now care more about attending a well-known college in a city than choosing a particular branch.
Computer Science was still the most popular subject.
Some new courses, such as Generative AI and Data Science, had no students in the analysis.
An education consultant said rural students may need better help with online counselling.
He also said colleges should offer more varied courses instead of opening too many similar computer-related programmes.
Only 41.15% of Tamil Nadu’s 1,81,436 academic engineering seats were filled after TNEA Round 2.
More than 93,000 students participated in Round 2, producing 49,984 allotments.
Students increasingly prefer reputed, urban colleges, even when that means choosing different branches.
Computer Science and Engineering remained the top choice, while newer AI-related programmes recorded no filled seats in the analysis.
Consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi warned that low enrolment could affect colleges’ resources and create a future placement bottleneck.
