CAA Fails to Aid Bangladesh's Hindus
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed in India in 2019 to help Hindus from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan get Indian citizenship if they came to India illegally.
However, the law has a cut-off date of December 31, 2014, meaning it only helps those who came to India before that date.
Now, Hindus in Bangladesh are facing violence, but the CAA cannot help them because they came after the cut-off date.
The Indian government has not changed the cut-off date, and the law is mostly used for political reasons rather than helping the people it was supposed to protect.
CAA has a cut-off date of December 31, 2014, preventing recent Bangladeshi Hindu migrants from benefiting.
The law was politically marketed to help Bangladeshi Hindus but is ineffective in current communal violence situations.
The Modi government has not published statistics on how many people have been granted citizenship under the CAA.
CAA is used for political mobilisation, such as threatening Indian Muslims and Hindutva campaigns.
Media control limits pressure on the government to remove the cut-off date and make the CAA useful for current Bangladeshi Hindus.
