Foreign Debt Inflows Trail Expectations Despite Easier Investment Norms
Imagine India's bond market is like a special savings account that foreign investors can use.
Even though India made it easier to put money into this account through a special program called FAR, not as much money has come in as expected.
While some money did come in, especially through the FAR, it's less than half of what people thought would arrive.
This is happening even though foreign investors are taking money out of India's stock market, which is usually a bit riskier.
Factors like global worries, changes in interest rates, and even how India is doing economically are influencing these decisions.
Although Indian bonds offer steady returns and easy access to money, other global events might be making investors hesitant.
However, some positive signs like strong sales during festivals and potential trade deals could encourage more investment in the future.
Foreign portfolio investors have invested only Rs 69,073 crore ($7.8 billion) in India's debt market so far in 2025, falling short of expectations.
Despite easier norms, the Fully Accessible Route (FAR) has attracted $10.7 billion in total for 2024 and 2025, significantly less than the projected $20-25 billion.
Inflows through the FAR in October 2025 were Rs 15,144 crore, while the debt general category saw only Rs 12,083 crore in 2025.
Foreign investors have withdrawn Rs 1.39 lakh crore from Indian equities in 2025, showing a strategic rebalancing towards debt for stability.
Factors influencing these flows include global economic uncertainties, geopolitical issues, and India's macroeconomic story, with potential for future inflows based on economic performance and trade developments.
