Chennai’s Smart City Mission Delivers Progress, but Falls Short

Chennai’s Smart City Mission Delivers Progress, but Falls Short

Chennai joined a national program in 2015 to become a smarter city.

The program meant using better planning, technology and public spaces to improve daily life.

Some projects made sidewalks better, restored water bodies and added smart classrooms.

A control centre also helps officials watch floods, rainfall and water levels.

However, some important technology projects stopped before they were finished.

People and officials also disagreed about how much residents have benefited.

One major problem was that many government agencies had to work together, but coordination was difficult.

The project changed some parts of Chennai without changing the whole city.

The next challenge is to connect these separate improvements and make them work better for everyone.
