Glass Industry Says Bottle Caps Blamed for Microplastics in Drinks
Scientists have found tiny pieces of plastic, called microplastics, in drinks packaged in glass bottles.
The glass industry says the glass bottles aren't the problem.
They point the finger at the bottle caps, saying the color on the caps is the source.
A study by French scientists found more microplastics in drinks from glass bottles than in drinks from plastic bottles or cans.
The glass industry group is using this study to show that the glass itself is safe.
They also note the microplastics likely come from the metal bottle caps.
Microplastics found in beverages packaged in glass bottles are attributed to the bottle caps, not the bottles themselves.
The All India Glass Manufacturers’ Federation (AIGMF) issued a statement addressing this issue.
The AIGMF cited a study by ANSES, the French agency, and responses from EU counterparts to support their claims.
ANSES's study found higher microplastic content in beverages from glass bottles compared to plastic bottles, cartons, or cans.
Researchers concluded that microplastics likely originate from the color used on metal bottle caps.
