J&K Assembly Passes Statehood Resolution Amid BJP Walkout
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly voted to ask India’s central government to restore the region’s statehood.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah introduced the proposal.
It also mentioned older Assembly decisions about autonomy and special status.
BJP lawmakers said those references were inappropriate and opposed the proposal’s wording.
They said they support statehood but want it restored at an appropriate time.
Other lawmakers proposed mentioning Articles 370 and 35A, but later withdrew those changes.
The BJP protested loudly, and the Speaker briefly stopped the meeting.
The resolution eventually passed by a voice vote.
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passed Omar Abdullah’s resolution urging immediate restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory.
The resolution referenced Assembly decisions from June 2000 and November 2024 concerning autonomy and special status.
BJP legislators opposed the autonomy reference, shouted slogans, tore copies of the resolution and walked out.
Ten proposed amendments seeking references to Articles 370 and 35A were withdrawn after discussion and the Speaker’s appeal.
The resolution passed by voice vote, while reports described disorder including protests in the Well and attempts to throw microphones.
