EC Demands More Autonomy for West Bengal's Election Chief
Imagine the person in charge of elections in West Bengal doesn't have enough power to do their job properly.
The Election Commission, which runs elections, noticed this.
They told the West Bengal government that the person in charge needs more financial and administrative freedom, like having their own budget.
Right now, they have to ask another department for money.
The Election Commission wants the state to create a special, independent department just for elections.
They also want to fill some empty jobs in the election office to get ready for future elections.
This is all to make sure elections are fair and run smoothly.
The Election Commission (EC) flagged a lack of financial and administrative autonomy for the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal.
The EC has asked the West Bengal government to take corrective steps.
The CEO's office currently operates with limited financial powers.
The EC wants the state government to create a separate election department completely delinked from other departments.
The EC has also requested filling four vacant posts of Addl./Joint/Deputy CEOs in the CEO's office.
