Union Bank of India and Bank of India May Merge by Year-End
Two big banks in India, Union Bank of India and Bank of India, might join together by the end of this year.
The government wants to make fewer but stronger banks to help with big projects and compete better.
The new bank would be very large, with lots of money and customers.
But joining the banks together is not easy because they use different computer systems.
Both banks have been doing better lately, making more money and having fewer problems with loans.
The government has done this kind of joining before, making 10 banks into 4 bigger ones a few years ago.
Union Bank of India and Bank of India are undergoing due diligence for a potential merger by year-end.
The merger aims to create one of India's largest public sector lenders with assets of ₹25.4 lakh crore in FY25.
The combined entity would rank as the second-largest PSU bank and sixth overall in market capitalisation.
Key challenges include integrating different technology platforms and core banking systems.
The government's goal is to reduce the number of PSU banks from 12 to 4-5 larger, stronger lenders.
