Mumbra Accident Probe: GRP Counters CR Report, Denies Backpack Evidence
A train crash happened in Mumbra a while ago where five people sadly died.
The police (GRP) had blamed some railway workers for not taking care of the tracks.
But now, the police told a court that a bag they thought caused the problem wasn't even found when they looked for it.
The railway workers' lawyers told the court that the train tracks are always being fixed and that the trains were too full of people, which caused the accident.
The court will decide soon if the workers can get special bail.
The police think the problem was with the tracks because of rain and speed, but the railway people think it was too many people on the train.
The GRP informed the court that a protruding backpack, blamed by CR for the Mumbra train accident, was not found during the investigation.
CR engineers, seeking anticipatory bail, argued that their continuous track maintenance work did not cause the accident, attributing it instead to overcrowding.
The GRP presented CCTV footage suggesting trains were not overcrowded and cited track maintenance lapses as the cause, with speed and rain contributing to gravel displacement.
The defense for the CR engineers mentioned an internal inquiry report that blamed overcrowding and suggested the backpack may have been lost during the incident.
The court is set to decide on the anticipatory bail pleas of the two CR engineers on Wednesday.
- Who
- Government Railway Police (GRP), Central Railway (CR) engineers Vishal Dolas and Samar Yadav, and their defense lawyer.
- What
- The GRP informed the court that a key piece of evidence (a protruding backpack) blamed for a fatal train accident was not found during the investigation, countering a CR report. Engineers seeking anticipatory bail argued their maintenance efforts were constant and the accident was due to overcrowding.
- When
- The accident occurred on June 9. The GRP's statement to the court was made on a Tuesday (unspecified date, but recent relative to the article). The decision on the engineers' bail pleas is expected on Wednesday.
- Where
- Mumbra
- Why
- The GRP presented its findings to counter a CR report and support its FIR against CR engineers, while the engineers sought to argue against the negligence claims and highlight overcrowding as the cause.

Cause of Accident
Government Railway Police (GRP)
The GRP alleges the accident was caused by engineers' failure to maintain the track, citing gravel displacement due to rain and train speed, leading to commuters crashing into each other. They also question the presence of friction marks on the train exterior and smashed windows.
Central Railway (CR) & Engineers
CR and the accused engineers attribute the accident to overcrowding, citing an internal inquiry report. They emphasize 24x7 track maintenance efforts by railway officials and suggest the backpack may have been misplaced.
Evidence of Backpack
Government Railway Police (GRP)
The GRP stated in court that a protruding backpack, blamed by CR in a previous report, was not found during the accident investigation (panchnama).
Central Railway (CR) & Engineers
The defense lawyer for the engineers suggests the backpack might have been misplaced during the accident, implying its absence doesn't negate its potential involvement.
Technical Reports
Government Railway Police (GRP)
The GRP relies on a VJTI technical report, CCTV footage, and statements from 32 individuals. They question the CR report's findings and the displacement of gravel being far from the accident site.
Central Railway (CR) & Engineers
The CR engineers' defense acknowledges VJTI's expertise but argues their own internal inquiry, combining theoretical and practical aspects, should be considered, alongside the constant maintenance work.
