Infosys Share Buyback: Key Tax Rule Changes
Infosys is offering to buy back its shares at ₹1,800 each, which is higher than the current price.
This is good news for shareholders because they can sell their shares for more money.
However, there's a new tax rule that started on April 1, 2024.
Now, the money you get from selling your shares back to Infosys is considered as dividend income and will be taxed based on your income tax slab.
Before this rule, the money was tax-free.
Experts say that if your total income, including the buyback money, is below a certain limit (₹12 lakh for non-salaried and ₹12.75 lakh for salaried individuals), you might not have to pay any tax on it.
Also, if you made a loss when you bought the shares, you can use that loss to reduce your taxes in the future.
Infosys is offering a share buyback at ₹1,800 per share, 15% higher than the current price of ₹1,575.
The buyback offer ends on November 26, 2025.
New tax rules effective April 1, 2024 classify buyback proceeds as dividend income, taxable at the individual's slab rate.
Under the old tax regime, long-term capital gains are taxed at 12.5%, and short-term gains at 20%.
Shareholders can carry forward capital losses from the acquisition of shares to offset future gains.
