E20 Fuel: BS-III Vehicles May Need Gasket Replacement
The Indian government is using a fuel called E20, which has 20% ethanol, in cars.
Some older cars made between 2005 and 2016 might need new rubber parts when they run on this fuel.
Tests by several research groups say the engines don’t need changes and the cars still work well.
Car makers say they will keep their warranties for cars that use E20.
But the government hasn’t counted how many cars can use the fuel or kept a list of complaints, so people are still worried about extra costs and fuel savings.
BS-III vehicles (2005‑2016) may need rubber parts/gaskets replaced when using E20 fuel.
Studies by IOCL, IIP, SIAM, and ARAI found no engine modifications needed and no performance issues.
Manufacturers continue to honor warranties for vehicles using E20.
The government has not assessed how many vehicles are E20‑compatible or kept state‑wise complaint records.
Opposition and consumer groups raise concerns about mileage loss, maintenance costs, and lack of transparency.
