Bhandara Farmer Dies After Warning Minister of Drought Distress

Rajendra Sapate was a 55-year-old farmer in Maharashtra.

His paddy crop was badly damaged because there was not enough rain.

A few days before his death, he told minister Pankaj Bhoyar that farmers were struggling because they lacked water for their fields.

Bhoyar had visited the area to review the drought and said action would be taken.

On October 8, Sapate was found in a well in a field.

Police registered the death as an accidental death case and are investigating.

His relatives said they did not suspect anyone and did not want to press charges.

The report also says Maharashtra was seeking special financial help from the central government because drought had affected many areas.
