Israel Names Military General as New Mossad Chief

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has chosen Major General Roman Gofman to be the new head of Mossad, the country's foreign intelligence agency.

Gofman is a military general with no background in intelligence.

He was born in Belarus, moved to Israel as a teenager, and has had a long military career.

He was recently wounded in clashes with Hamas militants.

Some people, like a columnist named Uri Misgav, think Gofman is not the right choice because he lacks intelligence experience.

However, Netanyahu's office says Gofman is very capable.

The Mossad has been successful recently in killing leaders of Hezbollah and Iranian military forces.

This appointment is part of a trend where Netanyahu is choosing people close to his nationalist ideas for important positions.

Gofman has also been involved in a past controversy over passing classified information to an Israeli teenager for an unsanctioned social media influence campaign.
