US Senators Push for Lower Pulse Tariffs in India

US Senators Push for Lower Pulse Tariffs in India

Two American senators, Steve Daines and Kevin Cramer, have written a letter to President Trump asking him to talk to India's Prime Minister Modi about a 30% tax India puts on American pulses like peas.

The senators say this tax makes it hard for American farmers to sell their pulses in India.

India is the biggest buyer of pulses in the world, and the senators think if this tax is removed, both American farmers and Indian consumers will benefit.

The senators also mentioned that they had raised this issue before and it helped in previous talks.

The tax is set to start on November 1, 2025.

The US ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, met with India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss these trade matters and other bilateral relations.

The US has also imposed 50% tariffs on some Indian imports, and both countries are negotiating a trade agreement.
