Ministers Push for Paddy Procurement
Two ministers in India, one from Telangana and one from Jharkhand, are working to help farmers sell their paddy (a type of rice).
The minister from Telangana asked the central government to buy more paddy from farmers.
He wants the target to be increased to 80 lakh metric tonnes because the current target is too low.
The minister from Jharkhand started a program to buy paddy directly from farmers and pay them immediately.
He also said that farmers will get a bonus for their paddy.
Both ministers want to make sure farmers are treated fairly and get paid on time.
Telangana's Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy urged the Centre to increase the paddy procurement target for Kharif 2025–26 to 80 LMT.
Jharkhand's Food Minister Ansari launched paddy procurement with a target of 7 LMT and direct payments to farmers.
Jharkhand is the first state to ensure one-time direct payment to farmers immediately after procurement.
The Government of India has allocated 35 LMT of rice for KMS 2024–25, with 17.83 LMT of parboiled rice and 1.13 LMT of raw rice already received.
Jharkhand farmers will receive a bonus of Rs 81 per quintal in addition to the Centre’s MSP for the 2025-26 fiscal.
