Allahabad HC Orders UP DGP to Issue SOP for Mandatory Videography of Police Searches
The Allahabad High Court has told the Uttar Pradesh police chief to make a detailed plan for recording all police searches and seizures on video.
The court said this is important to make sure the police follow the rules and to protect innocent people.
The court also said that not following these rules makes it hard to trust the police's evidence in court.
The police chief has been asked to work with a national crime records bureau to make this plan and to warn officers that they could get in trouble if they don't follow it.
Allahabad High Court directed UP DGP to issue an SOP for mandatory audio-video recording of police searches and seizures.
The order was passed by Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal while allowing a bail application in a theft case.
The court noted the police failed to record the search and seizure as required by Section 105 of the BNSS and Rule 18 of the UP BNSS Rules, 2024.
The court emphasized that non-compliance undermines prosecution cases and may lead to disciplinary action against officers.
The DGP was mandated to issue the SOP in coordination with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
