Flood-Rescued Elephant Joymoti Airlifted to Vantara for Hospital Care
Joymoti is an elephant who was caught in floodwaters in Nagaland.
People in local communities helped rescue her with government agencies.
She was hurt in several parts of her body.
One wound near her external genital area was deep and infected with maggots.
Her right eye was badly damaged, so she cannot see through it.
She also has an older injury in her left back leg from logging.
That injury makes walking and finding food and water difficult.
Joymoti was flown to Vantara so she could receive specialised hospital care.
Joymoti was swept away by floodwaters in Nagaland during the second week of July.
Local communities rescued her with assistance from government agencies.
She sustained wounds to her forehead, right ear, abdomen, left inner thigh and other areas.
A deep, maggot-infested wound affected the area around her external genitalia.
Her severely damaged right eye has left her blind in that eye, while an old left hind-leg fracture causes lameness.
