SAT questions Sebi's two-month ban on Zee, reserves interim order

SAT questions Sebi's two-month ban on Zee, reserves interim order

Zee Entertainment is a big television company in India.

Sebi, India's stock market rule-keeper, told Zee it could not use the stock market for two months, and barred the company's founder and managing director for one year.

Zee thought this was unfair and asked a special court called SAT to help.

The court did not decide right away, but the judges asked Sebi some hard questions, like what would really change after two months.

Zee wants to sell special shares called warrants to raise about Rs 3,143 crore, and its shareholders already said yes.

Zee says the ban could stop that share sale, because the warrants are priced against the market and the sale has to happen within a short time window.

Sebi says letting the sale go ahead would weaken its punishment and could secretly let Zee's boss back into the market.

The court asked both sides to send more information within six weeks and will give its answer later.
