IVPA urges government to curb Nepali edible oil imports
The Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association (IVPA) has asked the government to take action against a big increase in duty-free edible oil imports from Nepal.
They say imports have gone up more than 17 times in two years, which could hurt Indian oil refineries and farmers.
The IVPA wants the government to check if the oils really come from Nepal or if they are being sent from other countries to avoid taxes.
They also want the government to look at the tax rules to make sure Indian businesses are not at a disadvantage.
The IVPA says this is not to stop trade with Nepal but to make sure the rules are followed fairly.
India is the world's largest importer of edible oils, and the IVPA is worried that the surge in imports from Nepal could lead to a loss of Rs 2,000-2,500 crore in customs revenue every year.
IVPA calls for government action on surging duty-free edible oil imports from Nepal under SAFTA.
Imports from Nepal increased over 17-fold in two years, reaching 804,000 tonnes in 2025.
IVPA warns of potential impacts on domestic refining capacity, investment, and oilseed demand.
Estimated annual loss in customs revenue due to the surge is Rs 2,000-2,500 crore.
IVPA seeks stricter compliance with SAFTA's Rules of Origin and a review of the tariff structure.
