New BIS Rules Define Diamond Terminology

New BIS Rules Define Diamond Terminology

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced new rules to define what can be called a diamond.

According to the new rules, the term 'diamond' only applies to natural diamonds.

Jewellers can use prefixes like 'real', 'natural', 'precious', and 'genuine' to describe natural diamonds.

For man-made alternatives, terms like 'laboratory-created diamond', 'lab-grown diamond', 'laboratory-grown diamond', 'LGD', and 'lab-diamond' must be used.

The BIS has also clarified that terms like 'pure', 'natural', 'cultured', and 'earth-friendly' cannot be used for lab-grown diamonds.

This initiative aims to bring clarity and transparency to the diamond industry and protect consumers.

The Natural Diamond Council (NDC) and various Indian jewellery brands have welcomed this initiative.
