8th Pay Commission: Govt Says It Is Independent, No Update on Fitment Factor
The Indian government said that the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) can work on its own and does not have to tell the government about its meetings or what it is thinking.
The government also said it does not know if workers want the CPC to count more family members when it decides how much people should get paid.
The CPC will finish its report in 18 months.
The fitment factor is a number that helps decide how much people’s salaries and pensions will change.
Some workers want this number to be higher, and they also want the CPC to count more family members when it looks at living costs.
The government clarified that the CPC does not need to inform it of meetings or consultations.
The government neither confirmed nor denied employee union demands to increase family units in the fitment factor calculation.
The CPC will submit its recommendations within 18 months of its constitution, per the November 3, 2025 resolution.
The fitment factor is a multiplier that determines salary, pension, and retirement benefits for central government employees.
Employee bodies have proposed fitment factor ranges of 3.0‑3.5 or 3.68 and suggest counting five family units instead of three.
