US Navy Taiwan Strait Transit Precedes Planned Xi-Trump Meeting

A U.S. Navy plane flew through the Taiwan Strait on Friday.

The United States said the plane was in international airspace and followed international law.

The U.S. Navy said the flight showed support for a free and open Indo-Pacific.

China watched and tracked the plane during the trip.

China says Taiwan and the strait are connected to its territory and internal affairs.

Taiwan rejects China’s sovereignty claim and says its people should decide the island’s future.

The flight happened before an expected meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump.

The two countries are trying to manage disagreements about Taiwan, trade, and technology.

Taiwan is also proposing a major increase in defense spending, including money for drones and missiles.
