Freedom Movement in Assam and Other Northeastern States

Freedom Movement in Assam and Other Northeastern States

A long time ago, Britain ruled India, and people in the northeastern part of India wanted to be free.

In Assam, people joined big peaceful protests like the Swadeshi Movement and the Quit India Movement.

A brave 17-year-old named Kanaklata Barua died while trying to raise the Indian flag.

A leader named Gopinath Bordoloi later became Assam's first Chief Minister, after helping keep Assam part of India.

In Manipur, leaders like Bir Tikendrajit and General Thangal fought the British and were punished after the Anglo-Manipur War.

Manipuri women also led protests, called Nupi Lan, against unfair British rules.

Some people from Manipur joined the Indian National Army, led by Subhas Chandra Bose.

In Meghalaya, the Khasi chief Tirot Sing led a rebellion to protect his people from British intrusion.

In Nagaland, people focused on keeping their culture and resisting British policies.

In the end, people from all these northeastern states helped India become free.
