Odisha's Similipal Reserve Launches All-India Tiger Estimation 2026
In India, a big count of tigers has started in a place called Similipal Tiger Reserve.
This is part of a plan to count all the tigers in the country.
First, special teams will look for signs of tigers and other big animals, like footprints, for a few days.
They will also count birds.
Then, they will use many cameras, about 1,500 of them, to take pictures of the tigers.
These cameras will be set up in different parts of the park for a long time.
This helps scientists know exactly how many tigers are living there.
Similipal is a special park because it is home to rare black tigers, and scientists want to know how many there are.
The last count showed there were 24 grown-up tigers and 8 baby tigers.
The All-India Tiger Estimation-2026 has begun at Similipal Tiger Reserve in Odisha.
The first phase includes carnivore/herbivore sign surveys, line transects, and bird counts until November 22.
Approximately 1,500 camera traps will be deployed across 1,321 grids starting December 1 for the second phase.
Similipal Tiger Reserve is known for its unique black tigers.
The previous 2022 estimation reported 24 adult tigers and 8 cubs in the reserve.
