MP Urges Study on Arecanut Diseases
A member of parliament named Capt.
Brijesh Chowta from the BJP party spoke in the Indian parliament about a problem affecting arecanut farmers in the coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka.
These farmers are facing diseases like leaf spot, yellow leaf disease, and fruit rot, which are causing significant crop losses.
Chowta suggested that the government should conduct a scientific study to better understand and manage these diseases.
He also proposed that the current financial support provided under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) should be revised to offer more realistic and flexible support based on the actual needs of the farmers.
BJP MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta urged the Union government to initiate a scientific study on arecanut diseases in Karnataka.
Arecanut farmers in the coastal and Malnad regions are battling recurring outbreaks of leaf spot, yellow leaf disease, and fruit rot.
Chowta proposed revising MIDH guidelines to provide realistic financial support for disease management.
Current MIDH assistance is linked to fixed unit costs and does not account for variations in disease intensity or actual treatment costs.
Scientific disease management should include timely diagnosis, plantation sanitation, nutrient management, drainage improvement, regular monitoring, and replanting where necessary.
