Shivakumar Plans Black Soldier Fly Composting in Bengaluru
Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, D K Shivakumar, wants to start a new way of turning waste into compost using black soldier flies in Bengaluru.
This method has been tried in Mangaluru and was even talked about by the Prime Minister.
The plan is to build four waste management plants in different parts of the city.
However, some people, like a local MLA named Dheeraj Muniraju, don't want the plant in Doddaballapur because they say it has already caused problems for the people living there.
The government says they will make sure the new plants are safe and good for the environment.
They also want to take over a company called Terra Firma Bio Technologies Limited, which was shut down in 2016 for not following the rules.
The government has already bought land to build a new waste management plant.
Another politician, R Ashoka, suggests making waste management an essential service to stop what he calls the 'garbage mafia' from causing problems.
Karnataka Deputy CM D K Shivakumar plans to introduce black soldier fly composting in Bengaluru to manage 8,000 metric tonnes of daily waste.
The technology has been tested in Mangaluru and mentioned by PM Narendra Modi.
Shivakumar proposes establishing four waste management plants in different parts of Bengaluru, including Doddaballapur, Bidadi, and Kanakapura.
Doddaballapur BJP MLA Dheeraj Muniraju opposes the plant's restart in Doddaballapur due to existing environmental issues and public opposition.
The government plans to revive the solid waste management firm Terra Firma Bio Technologies Limited and has acquired land for a new integrated solid waste management plant.
