SC Bars Commercial Use of Mumbai Coastal Road Reclaimed Land
The Supreme Court of India has said that the land reclaimed for the Mumbai Coastal Road (South) should be open to the public and not used for any residential or commercial purposes.
This decision was made while the court was looking at a complaint about the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) inviting private companies to take care of the landscaping and maintenance of this area.
The court has made it clear that the land should stay open for everyone to use and enjoy, and no one should build houses or shops there.
The court also mentioned that some small developments might be needed for maintenance, but the main idea is to keep the area public.
Supreme Court bars any residential or commercial development on reclaimed land along Mumbai Coastal Road (South).
Land should ordinarily remain open to the public, except for necessary development or maintenance work.
Court disposes of a PIL challenging BMC's Expression of Interest (EoI) for private agencies to handle landscaping and maintenance.
Earlier order of September 30, 2022, already prohibited any residential or commercial use of the reclaimed land.
PIL sought to quash any decision appointing Reliance Industries Limited or Reliance Foundation as the volunteer agency.
