Israel Recognizes Somaliland, Sparking Global Condemnation
Israel has decided to recognize Somaliland as an independent country, which is a big deal because no other country has done this before.
Somaliland has been governing itself since 1991 but was never officially recognized.
Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu said this move is in line with the Abraham Accords, which are agreements between Israel and some Middle Eastern countries.
However, Somalia, which considers Somaliland part of its territory, is very upset and says this is illegal.
Many other countries and organizations, like the African Union, the European Union, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, also disagree with Israel's decision, saying it could cause problems in the region.
The United States has said it does not support recognizing Somaliland and continues to recognize Somalia's territorial integrity.
The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting to discuss the issue, as Somalia is set to assume the presidency of the Council soon.
Somaliland hopes that Israel's recognition will encourage other countries to do the same, helping it gain more international support and access to markets.
Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state.
Somalia condemned the move as unlawful and a threat to its sovereignty, supported by the EU, African Union, and several countries.
President Trump opposed US recognition of Somaliland, questioning its significance.
Netanyahu cited the Abraham Accords as the inspiration for the recognition, aiming for cooperation in various sectors.
Somaliland hopes for increased diplomatic recognition and international market access following Israel's move.
