Elathur Lake Designated Biodiversity Heritage Site in Tamil Nadu
Imagine a beautiful lake where lots of different birds live!
Villagers in Tamil Nadu worked together to protect Elathur Lake.
They convinced the government to make it a special protected area, like a national park, called a Biodiversity Heritage Site.
This means the lake, home to nearly 200 bird species, gets extra protection.
The community can now help manage and watch over the lake to make sure the birds and other animals that live there are safe.
The government hopes this encourages other communities to protect their local environments.
Elathur Lake in Tamil Nadu has been declared a Biodiversity Heritage Site.
The lake spans 37.42 hectares and is home to 187 bird species.
The designation followed community and government collaboration.
Local committees will help map species and set conservation rules.
This is Tamil Nadu's third Biodiversity Heritage Site.
