Controversy Surrounds India's SIR Process
There is a big discussion happening in India about a process called Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which is about updating the list of people who can vote.
Some famous people, like Amartya Sen, Akhilesh Yadav, and Rahul Gandhi, are saying that this process is being done too quickly and might stop some people from voting, especially those who don't have the right papers.
They are worried that this could make the elections unfair.
In West Bengal, many people are protesting because they feel harassed and anxious about the process.
The government and the Election Commission say they are doing this to make the voter list more accurate, but others think it's being used to help certain political parties.
The situation is quite tense, and people are worried about what will happen in the upcoming elections.
The Supreme Court has ordered the Election Commission to display the names of those on the 'logical discrepancies' list, and there have been allegations of bulk Form 7s being used to delete voters' names.
The Trinamool Congress has been actively resisting the SIR process and has accused the Election Commission of not acting impartially.
The Election Commission uploaded the names of people on the 'logical discrepancies' list following a Supreme Court order.
Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP of using the SIR process to selectively delete voters from specific communities and Congress-supporting booths in Gujarat.
Abhishek Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress held a virtual meeting with party leaders to discuss the SIR process and its impact on the upcoming assembly elections.
The Trinamool Congress delegation will meet the Chief Electoral Officer in Kolkata to discuss the 'logical discrepancies' in the SIR process.
Abhishek Banerjee claimed that 126 people have died due to SIR-related anxiety and accused the Election Commission of not allowing the Trinamool Congress to participate in the hearing process.
