US Confirms Space-Based Weapons Amid Russia, China Threats
The United States says it has put some weapons in space.
Air Force Secretary Troy Meink announced this at a conference in Maryland.
He said the weapons could protect American forces from attacks.
He did not explain exactly what the weapons are or when they were launched.
The announcement reflects US concerns about Russia and China building powerful space technologies.
Some satellites are important for communications and other military systems.
The United States also says Russia may be developing dangerous anti-satellite capabilities, although Russia denies some of those claims.
An international treaty bans nuclear weapons in space, but it does not clearly ban every type of conventional weapon.
Air Force Secretary Troy Meink publicly confirmed that the United States has deployed weapons in space.
Meink said the on-orbit weapons could defend US forces against hostile actions by adversaries.
He did not identify the weapons or say when they were deployed.
The announcement came amid US concerns about space capabilities developed by Russia and China.
The 1967 Outer Space Treaty bans nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction in space but does not clearly prohibit conventional space weapons.

US Defense Rationale
Arms-Control and Adversary Concerns
Purpose of deploying weapons
US Defense Rationale
US officials say the weapons are needed to defend American forces and maintain dominance in space against hostile actions.
Arms-Control and Adversary Concerns
Russia and China have challenged US dominance in space, while arms-control discussions have included proposals to ban space weapons.
Threat assessment
US Defense Rationale
US officials have cited Russian satellite exercises and Chinese and Russian anti-satellite or space-based weapons programs as reasons to strengthen US capabilities.
Arms-Control and Adversary Concerns
Russia has denied a US allegation about developing a nuclear weapon for use in space, and reports cited by the articles do not establish that every alleged threat is imminent.
Legality and limits
US Defense Rationale
The United States says it can use capabilities that are not prohibited by the Outer Space Treaty, which does not clearly ban conventional space weapons.
Arms-Control and Adversary Concerns
The treaty prohibits nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction in space, and the US disclosure may intensify concerns about an arms race in orbit.
