Pentagon Demotes Senator Kelly for Reckless Misconduct
Senator Mark Kelly, who used to be a Navy captain, got in trouble for making a video with other lawmakers.
In the video, they told soldiers not to follow orders they thought were illegal.
The Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, said this was reckless and could hurt military discipline.
Because of this, Senator Kelly will be demoted, which means he will lose his higher rank and get less money when he retires.
The government also threatened to make him go back to active duty to face a trial, but they decided not to do that.
This whole situation started because of a video that six lawmakers made together.
The lawmakers said they were just restating the law, but the Pentagon and the Trump administration said the video was seditious and undermined military discipline.
Senator Mark Kelly, a retired Navy captain, is being demoted for reckless misconduct.
The demotion follows a video where Kelly and five other lawmakers urged troops to refuse illegal orders.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the demotion on Monday, January 5, 2026.
The Trump administration threatened to recall Kelly to active duty for prosecution but decided against it.
The action stops short of a full trial but still serves as a significant censure.
