US Senate Russia sanctions bill worries India's engineering exporters

The United States has written a new rule, called a bill, that could make some countries pay extra money, called tariffs, for energy-related business with America.

This bill is about Russia and the countries that buy energy like oil and gas from Russia.

The US Senate — one part of America's government — voted 86 to 11 to pass the bill.

The bill would give President Donald Trump the power to add tariffs of up to 100 percent on the biggest buyers of Russian energy.

India is one of the countries that buys energy from Russia, and India also sells many factory-made goods, called engineering goods, to America.

If America adds extra tariffs, those Indian goods could become more expensive, and Indian companies could lose customers.

A group called EEPC India, which helps Indian engineering exporters, said it is worried about this.

Indian engineering exports to America were worth $19.60 billion last year and were still growing.

But the bill is not a law yet — it still has to be approved by the other part of America's government, called the House of Representatives.

Some Democratic leaders there do not like the tariff parts of the bill, so people are watching to see what happens next.
