Nairobi Bulldozes Kibera Settlement for Housing Project, Raising Beneficiary Questions

Nairobi Bulldozes Kibera Settlement for Housing Project, Raising Beneficiary Questions

In the city of Nairobi, in Kenya, there is a big neighbourhood called Kibera where many families live in small homes.

The government wants to tear down some of those homes and build new apartment buildings instead.

President William Ruto, Kenya's leader, started a big plan to build affordable homes across the country.

The plan aims to build 200,000 new homes every year.

To help pay for it, workers give 1.5 percent of their pay each month, and their employers give the same amount.

Some people think the new homes are a good idea because they are more modern and safer.

But many people living in Kibera are worried about losing their homes.

Some families were told they had to move within 13 days and were given money that many say is not enough.

They fear the new apartments will cost too much to rent, and the people who lived there before may not be able to stay.

The big question is who will really get to live in the new homes.
