Giani Harpreet Singh Elected Head of Breakaway Akali Dal Faction
A new group has formed from the Shiromani Akali Dal party, led by Giani Harpreet Singh, and they held an election.
Bibi Satwant Kaur was also elected to a leadership role.
This happened after the Akal Takht, the highest religious authority for Sikhs, told the Akali Dal to reorganize and unite.
The new faction says they are the true Akali Dal.
They're going against the faction led by Sukhbir Badal, and this new faction hopes to gather more support from voters.
Giani Harpreet Singh was elected President of a breakaway faction of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Bibi Satwant Kaur was elected Chairperson of the party's religious wing.
The election was held under the supervision of a five-member committee formed by the Akal Takht.
The new faction views itself as the original Akali Dal.
