Protest in Pune against AWBI's stray dog SOP
A group of people in Pune held a protest against a new rule about stray dogs.
The rule, made by the Animal Welfare Board of India, says that stray dogs should be removed from places like schools and hospitals and not returned.
The protesters, led by an animal activist named Mariam Abuhaideri, think this rule is bad because it goes against other laws that say dogs should be returned to their areas after being sterilized and vaccinated.
They also worry that the rule might be part of a bigger plan to harm dogs.
The protesters want the rule to be canceled and are asking the government to do more to protect dogs.
Over 50 protesters led by Mariam Abuhaideri demonstrated in Pune against the AWBI's SOP for stray dog management.
The SOP requires the removal of stray dogs from institutional areas with a no-return policy, which protesters allege violates the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023.
Protesters demanded the immediate withdrawal of the SOP and raised concerns about a potential agenda related to the dog meat trade.
The AWBI SOP aims to establish a uniform national framework for preventing dog-bite incidents and managing stray dogs in institutional areas.
Protesters shared personal stories of harassment and violence faced while advocating for stray dogs.
