PMK Flags at Vijay Roadshow Stir Alliance Speculation
People carrying PMK flags appeared at a campaign event for Vijay’s TVK in Madurantakam.
This led people to wonder whether PMK might support TVK.
PMK says it has not told its members to support Vijay and is officially staying neutral in the by-elections.
The flags may have belonged to supporters acting on their own.
The Madurantakam vote matters because TVK’s government does not have enough seats for a majority.
AIADMK is also trying to win back the seat.
TVK says it hopes to build a larger alliance that might include PMK.
But VCK says it will not join an alliance with PMK.
The result could affect political alliances and the government’s strength.
People carrying PMK flags were seen at TVK president and Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s Madurantakam roadshow on Friday, prompting speculation about a possible alignment.
PMK fought the April Assembly election in the AIADMK-led alliance but is staying neutral in the October 6 bypolls in Madurantakam and Dharapuram.
PMK sources say there has been no official instruction to support TVK; they suggest the flags may have been carried by individual supporters or enthusiastic cadres.
The Madurantakam contest is significant for both TVK, whose government is short of a majority, and AIADMK, which is seeking to retain the seat.
TVK says it wants an inclusive alliance that could include PMK, while VCK has reiterated that it will not ally with PMK.
