Bombay High Court Sentences Tejpal to 10 Years for Rape
A court in India decided that a famous journalist named Tarun Tejpal must go to jail for 10 years.
He was found guilty of hurting a woman in a case from 2013.
He used to be the boss of a news magazine called Tehelka, which was famous for exposing bad things powerful people did.
Earlier, in 2021, a different court said he was not guilty.
But now a higher court has said he is guilty and must go to prison.
The judges said being famous and powerful does not mean you can escape the law.
They also said there is no single 'correct' way a person must behave after being hurt.
Tejpal can still ask the highest court in India, the Supreme Court, to review his case.
The ruling shows that people in positions of power and trust must follow the same rules as everyone else.
The Bombay High Court sentenced former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in the 2013 rape case.
The high court verdict overturned Tejpal's 2021 acquittal in the case.
Tejpal was the founder-editor of Tehelka, a publication known for exposing wrongdoing among the powerful.
The judgment affirmed that there is no prescribed manner in which a victim must behave after an assault.
The editorial notes that Tejpal retains his constitutional right to challenge the conviction before the Supreme Court.
