MP Questions Legal Authority of Chandigarh Heritage Committee

MP Questions Legal Authority of Chandigarh Heritage Committee

Imagine there's a special group in Chandigarh that decides which old buildings and areas should be protected.

A member of Parliament, Manish Tewari, is asking if this group has the right to make these decisions.

He says the group was created by a simple rule, not by a law made by the government.

The government says the group was made by the Chandigarh Administration, with permission from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Although Chandigarh isn't officially a 'heritage city,' some areas and buildings are considered important.

Tewari believes that even though protecting these places is important, the group needs a clear legal basis to make its decisions.
