F&O Trading Gains/Losses Must Be Reported as Business Income in ITR
If you trade in Futures & Options (F&O) in India, you must report any gains or losses as business income in your income tax return (ITR), even if your total income is below the exemption limit.
This is important because not reporting can lead to notices from the tax department and may cause you to lose the right to carry forward any business losses.
F&O trading is considered a non-speculative business transaction, so the profits are taxed at the normal rates that apply to individuals.
You can also claim expenses related to trading, like brokerage fees and internet costs, as long as they are properly documented.
Losses from F&O trading can be set off against other incomes in the same year or carried forward for up to eight years to be set off against future business income.
Make sure to report your F&O income in ITR-3 and keep your books of account if your income is over Rs 2.5 lakh, or get a tax audit if your turnover exceeds Rs 1 crore.
Individuals trading in F&O must report gains or losses as business income in ITR, even if income is below the exemption limit.
Non-reporting can result in notices and loss of the right to carry forward business losses.
F&O trading is classified as non-speculative business, taxed at normal slab rates for individuals.
Traders can claim expenses like brokerage, internet, and software fees if they are directly related to trading.
F&O losses can be set off against other incomes in the same year or carried forward for up to eight years.
