RBI Files Caveat as Tata Sons Listing Dispute Advances

RBI Files Caveat as Tata Sons Listing Dispute Advances

The Reserve Bank of India and Tata Sons disagree about whether Tata Sons must follow rules that could require it to list its shares publicly.

Tata Sons asked to give up its registration as a Core Investment Company.

The RBI rejected that request on September 11.

This means Tata Sons remains an Upper Layer non-banking finance company.

The RBI has now filed a caveat in court.

A caveat means the court should hear the RBI before giving Tata Sons temporary help or stopping the RBI’s decision.

Tata Sons may argue that its request should be judged using the rules that existed when it applied in March 2024.

It may also say that it should be allowed to reorganize instead of being required to list.

The dispute could decide how new financial rules apply to applications that were already pending.
